about
This is a comedy song written in my native Upper Coquetdale Northumbrian dialect about Robson and Cowan delivery driver Dave Johnson. Every Friday morning he would come into the tearoom at Barrowburn for two bacon sarnies and a cup of tea. He would sit and read his paper "as lang as I'm not in the road!"
lyrics
Yon geet big orange wagon comes a-traalin' up the road.
He caals at Barrowburn to drop ten pund worth of his load.
He sees yon fryin' pan and starts fair dribblin' at the mooth.
He says "I'll hae twae buns afore I torn me vehicle sooth.
Dave the driver likes his Friday mornin' bacon sarnies.
He doesn't stay ower lang, for fear at work there will be barnies.
He says, "Hinney, fill yer fryin' pan with rashers of the best,
I'll sit and read me paper, as lang as I'm not bein' a pest,
Ye can furnish it wi' fried eggs and some HP of the broon,
Darsay I'll fill me belly afore I head away back doon."
Dave the driver likes his Friday mornin' bacon sarnies.
He doesn't stay ower lang, for fear at work there will be barnies.
Nuw the folk from Uswayford are sitting at the other table,
After chawin' on yon flapjacks they'll be less inclined or able
To move so they'll hae five and sit and keep Dave company,
Afore the hand hits twelve, he'll head back doon tae Rothbury.
Dave the driver likes his Friday mornin' bacon sarnies.
He doesn't stay ower lang, for fear at work there will be barnies.
Nuw that Robson and Cowans laddie's had his fill for the weekend,
He climbs back in his cab and disappears aroond the bend,
He's got nee mair deliveries and he's had his reward,
And he's lang since lost coont of aal the cups o' tea he's poured.
Dave the driver likes his Friday mornin' bacon sarnies.
He doesn't stay ower lang, for fear at work there will be barnies.
