I wrote this song on a trip to the Rhineland, upon learning of this legend.
lyrics
The lady of Lorelei sat all alone upon her rock,
Singing to passers by, making her plea to sailors,
Nobody knew her name, nobody knew whence she came,
Nobody loved the lady of Lorelei.
Combing her golden hair, on yonder rock sat the maiden fair,
Sailors would stand and stare, enchanted by her beauty,
They would forget to steer, and onto the rocks their ships would veer,
And everyone blamed the lady of Lorelei,
But she was only looking for a friend,
She didn't mean for sailors lives to end,
But they only heard the devil in the cry
Of the lady of Lorelei.
When she had claimed the lives of many a humble sailor,
Some brave young knights were sent to stop this dreadful soul,
They went to throw her down, but already was she that way bound,
And no more was the lady of Lorelei.
But she was only looking for a friend,
She didn't mean for sailors lives to end,
'Pon a summer's breeze you still might hear the cry
Of the lady, of the lady, of the lady of Lorelei.
